Styling a rustic wooden wall feature for a nursery

This weekend has been so busy. My boyfriend and I are in the UK for a few days to do a total restyling of his flat. Renting his flat out through Air bnb when he comes over to Holland allows us to keep our between-two-countries-relationship going without breaking the bank and so we wanted to give the flat a restyling, as a way of saying thank you to the guests.

James has been making wooden bits for the ETSY shop and added a lot of really cool handmade wooden features to the interior, which he had been preparing in his workshop in Nijmegen. One of the features is a beautiful wooden wall feature with a light element featuring a retro filament bulb. It’s like a floating shelf and it’s made out of old wood previously used on a building site, we have had a bunch of it drying in my workroom at home for a few weeks. The wood has such a beautiful weathered look to it, a matte patina and greyish tone. You don’t even need to treat it since it has most likely been rained on and stepped on for months! Time to give the material the attention it deserves I’d say…

The wall piece consists of three rectangular compartments, perfect to display whatever you feel deserves just that little bit extra attention. It really does frame all your little plants or objects beautifully. As we put it up in the flat and I was getting ready to style it I thought to myself  ‘wouldn’t this look good in a nursery’? So before adding the light element to it, I wanted to do a photoshoot with the wall feature styled in full baby style.

So off I went to gather a  load of nappies and other baby paraphernalia, to try and create a photoshoot that could market this bit of wall embellishment on Etsy to a ‘yummy mummy’  audience (that’s a word my sister in law taught me, haven’t decided yet if it’s a nice term though).

Tadaaah.. simple, sleek, rustic, natural and definitely a gender neutral styling, which I am a fan of. I added a little customised kraft card banner as a whimsical twist.

Here a similar setup, but I placed a piece of patterned wallpaper behind the right compartment to insert a bit more colour. You could obviously also paint the wall behind it, but wallpaper is a less permanent option, just as effective but perfect for the changing-their-mind-a-lot-ters (like me)!

Rustic meets delicate, love it!

Have I mentioned I like textures and patterns? 😉

The good thing about rustic reclaimed wood is that it’s so easy to attach anything to. A little brass coloured nail is now a hook for a pacifier.

Tiny scratch mittens… so minute.

Quite chuffed with my nappie composition if I may say so myself..

I honestly love the retro style fruit themed patterns from Little bird (Jamie Oliver’s wife’s children’s clothing line available in the UK at Mothercare).  They are just so happy and colourful!

I had so much fun doing something completely different from the slick, modern and ‘grown-up’ mode of styling for a change. I made my boyfriend feel veeery uncomfortable when I walked in with a pack of nappies, but it was so worth it. By styling the wall feature this way, it’s definitely gonna appeal to a bigger audience.
